Background of the Study
Language is a fundamental pillar of cultural identity, yet rapid societal changes have contributed to significant language shifts. In Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Ogun State, the dominance of global languages in education, media, and commerce has led to a decline in the use of indigenous dialects (Oluwole, 2023). This language shift raises concerns regarding the erosion of cultural identity and the loss of indigenous knowledge systems. The interplay between traditional language and global lingua francas has resulted in a complex cultural dynamic. While some community members see the adoption of global languages as a pathway to modernity, others argue that it undermines cultural heritage and identity (Adebola, 2024). Recent studies have emphasized that language is integral to maintaining community values, traditions, and social cohesion. This study seeks to evaluate the implications of language shift on cultural identity in Ijebu-Ode, providing insights into how communities navigate linguistic changes (Olayinka, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
The increasing dominance of global languages in Ijebu-Ode has led to a gradual language shift, endangering the vitality of indigenous dialects and cultural identity. This linguistic transformation poses challenges for preserving traditional knowledge and community values. The problem is further exacerbated by generational gaps and educational policies favoring global languages over local tongues. Consequently, there is a critical need to assess the extent and implications of this language shift on cultural identity in the community (Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the extent of language shift in Ijebu-Ode.
  • To evaluate the impact of language shift on cultural identity.
  • To recommend strategies for preserving indigenous languages.

Research Questions:

  • To what extent has language shift occurred in Ijebu-Ode?
  • How does language shift affect cultural identity?
  • What strategies can help preserve indigenous languages in the community?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Language shift is negatively associated with the strength of cultural identity.
  • H₂: Younger generations are more likely to adopt global languages over indigenous ones.
  • H₃: Community-based language preservation programs positively influence cultural identity.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers valuable insights into the relationship between language and cultural identity. Its findings will guide cultural preservation initiatives and policy development aimed at sustaining indigenous languages in Ijebu-Ode (Akinola, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating language shift and its cultural implications in Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Ogun State, excluding broader national trends.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Language Shift: The process by which a community transitions from using its native language to another dominant language.
  • Cultural Identity: The sense of belonging to a particular culture or group, defined by shared traditions and language.
  • Indigenous Language: A language native to a specific region or community.
